As the climate changes, there needs to be urgent action taken to combat the impacts that the climate crisis has on both people and the planet. If you are looking to get involved locally, Southwest Neighborhood Assembly and friends are hosting a climate change and disaster preparedness community engagement fair on Saturday, October 14 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be several presentations, workshops, and tabling organizations (including GGWash!) there to educate people on what is being done, and what still needs to be done, as we prepare for and against climate change-related disasters.

Discuss Purple Line construction updates in Silver Spring:
During the month of October and into early November, the Maryland Department of Transportation and Maryland Transit Administration are hosting Community Advisory Team (CAT) meetings. These public meetings are to discuss updates in construction activities within their respective locations. There are two CAT meetings this week, and the meeting on Tuesday, October 10th will focus on Silver Spring purple line construction. This meeting will provide plenty of new updates as construction on the Purple Line in Silver Spring has been ramping up. No RSVP needed. Learn more about the meeting here.

The Arlington Committee of 100 is hosting an online panel to discuss the present and future impacts of climate change. Arlington Committee of 100 works to foster dialogue of issues that impact life in Arlington. Look through both a state and local lens on climate projections and the Arlington community’s vulnerabilities of inland flooding and extreme heat. Discuss housing for all in the city of Alexandria:
Zoning for Housing/Housing for All is hosting a hybrid community meeting to discuss the proposal of zoning reforms in a way that addresses equitable housing access within Alexandria. With a main focus on acknowledging past exclusionary housing provisions, the meeting will allow for future policies that meet higher standards of equity goals and metrics. Talk transit at a town hall in Montgomery County:
Montgomery County Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe and Annapolis’ District 15 team are joining forces to host a transportation town hall on Thursday, October 12. The goal of this town hall is to create space for conversations between public officials and Montgomery County residents on current and future transportation projects and opportunities in the Upcounty area. Celebrate the world of design with hands-on building experience:
The National Building Museum is hosting its big build festival for all ages. Children and adults alike can learn about the building process through interactive activities including plumbing, home remodeling, construction, woodworking, and more. There will be dozens of booths with varieties of activities oriented towards different ages. Some of which include: wiring a light, pouring concrete, and hammering nails, and of course, the outdoor truck petting zoo. Learn more about the event here.
