“Puerto Ricans have a message for Donald Trump: How many more insults do you expect us to take?
Puerto Rico has struggled through decades of economic decline, a series of punishing storms, an earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic in recent years. Its government has been crushed by debt and bogged down by scandal, and the territory’s infrastructure, particularly its power grid, is in shambles.
But Puerto Ricans were still offended and hurt that their beloved home was the brunt of a joke by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who referred to Puerto Rico as “literally a floating island of garbage” before a crowd of 20,000 Donald Trump supporters at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Still, most were not surprised given the a long line of insults from the former president, who has called Puerto Rico “dirty” and reportedly suggested trading the U.S. territory for Greenland.”
