CaBi Bikeshare breaks all-time ride record for 4th straight month in August

While the Washington region begins to cool, Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) ridership remains hot. CaBi broke the all-time monthly ridership record in August with 614,639 rides.

This is a 31.1% increase in system use from August 2023 and marks the fourth consecutive month where CaBi has shattered its previous milestone for busiest month on record. The regional network has experienced year-over-year monthly ridership increases for 32 consecutive months. Annual ridership continues to thrive as 3,788,634 trips have been taken in 2024—a 31.3% increase from a year prior.

As the Fall months near, it’s worth noting that 2023 was the busiest year in CaBi’s nearly 14 year history with 4,469,358 rides. With four months remaining in 2024, the system is now roughly 680,000 rides away from surging past its previous annual milestone. Capital Bikeshare’s members consistently make up the majority of rides (63.2%) while e-bikes made up a majority of trips (58.6%) for the second straight month.

As we reported in March of this year, Virginia is home to over a third of Capital Bikeshare’s stations, but only hosted 9.2% of the region’s rides. The commonwealth is now poised for expansion as Fairfax County announced an intention to add a total of 16 new stations across the Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, and Seven Corners neighborhoods. The news of potential CaBi investment in Virginia comes one month after Montgomery County, Maryland, decided to remove 10 stations from service, as reported in July’s Bikeshare Beat.

The District remained the busiest biking center in the region, hosting 86.1% of all docked vehicle rides in August. This month’s ridership, broken down by ending destination in DC, is shown below. Underscoring CaBi’s significant value to downtown’s recovery from the effects of the pandemic, Ward 2 was the ending destination for 43.7% of rides in the District.

The region’s largest private micromobility provider, Lime, has also seen significant increases in ridership across their scooters and e-bikes. In a report shared with GGWash, Lime reported 669,000 rides in the District in August, a 41% increase from August 2023. A well-deserved Pedal Medal to you, Lime!
