Enough is enough. It’s time to undo the Biden administration’s disastrous Israel and Gaza miscalculation.
If you read any of my commentary on posts about Israel and Gaza the last few days, you are already well aware of how I feel about it. Biden should have withheld aid until Netanyahu committed to a ceasefire well before hundreds of children died of starvation.
He definitely should have stopped sending the 2,000 pound bombs used to kill so many civilians at a time. If you’re targeting one or a few Hamas militants, use a drone to carry out a targeted strike. There’s no need to destroy entire neighborhoods with families inside the homes.
After the intentional killing of the 7 WCK aid workers, he definitely should have stopped all aid until Netanyahu allowed food, water, and medical aid to flow into Gaza.
Even though the IDF admitted to targeting the WCK vehicles, because they thought there was an armed Islamic Jihadist with them, all U.S.media was reporting it as a mistake—that they accidentally hit them. Why would they do that?
Members of Netanyahu’s right-wing government came out early on in the war and said they wanted to kill everyone in Gaza. Another referenced their plan to push them South, then force them to head through the border with Egypt into the desert so they could steal their land. Outrage and indignation from the President of the United States and his aides, no matter how great, no matter how many times expressed or leaked to the press, will not save the suffering people of Gaza. Nor will they restore the high standing previously enjoyed by the Biden administration’s foreign policy.
Neither, sadly, will more “or else” conversations between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu like the one that took place on Thursday.
The White House indicated that in the conversation, the president “made clear that U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on reducing civilian harm, stabilizing the humanitarian situation, and protecting innocent civilians.” There have been too many such conversations and too few constructive results.
Shortly after the meeting, Israel did announce the opening of another crossing into Gaza to enable the flow of humanitarian aid. While positive, this is just one step among many needed to stop the mass tragedy in Gaza.
To achieve the big changes that are urgently needed, only additional concrete actions—that thus far the U.S. has been reluctant to take—will suffice. Specifically, only an acknowledgement that providing arms to a murderer is irresponsible—and has made the United States complicit in the mass murder of innocents in Gaza—will do that.
