In his latest round of television interviews, it appears he will not be swayed by the mounting evidence that theΒ racist lies he amplifiedΒ about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating petsβwhich former President TrumpΒ repeatedΒ on the debate stage this week toΒ 67 million viewersβare demonstrably false. Instead, TrumpβsΒ historically unpopularΒ running mate doubled down on his claims in a series of interviews on CNN, NBC, and CBSβeven after the reporters fact-checked him.
Letβs start with Vanceβs interview onΒ CNNβsΒ State of the Union, which saw the most time dedicated to the topicβand featured Vanceβs most combative exchange.
Host Dana Bash asked Vance why he continues amplifying the claims, given that Springfield hasΒ received multiple bomb threatsΒ that led to two hospitalsΒ going into lockdown Saturday, plus several schools and the city hall being evacuated since TrumpΒ mentionedΒ the lies at the debate. As Bash also pointed out, Springfieldβs own mayorΒ toldΒ a local television station, βAll these federal politicians that have negatively spun our city, they need to know theyβre hurting our city, and it was their words that did it.β
βThese are your constituents,β Bash began, βso why are you putting them at risk by continuing to spread claims about Haitian immigrants, despite officials in your state saying that thereβs no evidence and pleading for you to stop?β
