The GOP’s descent into hell

The GOP has undergone a dramatic transformation that began when Donald Trump became president in 2016. Once the party of traditional conservatism, the GOP has become increasingly populist, nationalist, and authoritarian under Trump’s leadership.

One of the most significant changes has been the party’s embrace of conspiracy theories and misinformation. Trump has repeatedly spread false and misleading information about a wide range of topics, from the size of his inauguration crowd to the results of the 2020 presidential election. His supporters have followed suit, and the Republican Party has become increasingly hostile to fact-checkers and the media, i.e. reality.

They’ve also become more extreme on social issues. Trump rolled back environmental regulations, appointed conservative judges to the federal courts, and banned transgender people from serving in the military.

His supporters cheered these actions, and the GOP has become increasingly hostile to LGBTQ rights and environmental protection. They no longer care what the American people think. They’ve suppressed votes and gerrymandered to win elections.

John Cole’s Tennessee: Over the rainbow? Even as Nashville got its first rainbow crosswalk, new laws — including anti-LGBTQ ones — took effect.

What other reason is there to do things like ban abortion, refuse to do anything about school shootings, go after Disney, ban books, and other moves that up to 80% of the country disagrees with? It’s obvious they are more concerned with gaining and holding onto power, stopping people they disagree with from speaking out or voting, and building their authoritarian empire. They are done with democracy and if we don’t do whatever it takes to keep a Republican out of the White House, we lose our freedom (and sanity). (and reality).

Trump has repeatedly attacked the free press, called for the imprisonment of his political opponents, and encouraged violence against protesters.

He is now going after prosecutors, judges, and the criminal Justice system that is finally holding him accountable. His supporters have followed suit, and the GOP has become increasingly hostile to democracy and the rule of law.

The transformation of the Republican Party is a major threat to American democracy. The party has become increasingly hostile to facts, truth, and the rule of law.

These changes have made the GOP a more extreme and dangerous force in American politics. It is essential that we resist this trend and work to build a more inclusive and democratic society.
