75% of the Men Sent to El Salvador Mega Prison Have No Criminal Record, 60 Minutes Finds

A new report by 60 Minutes has revealed that 75% of the men sent to El Salvador have no criminal record. 22% committed non-violent crimes and 12% had actually committed violent crimes.

A deep-dive by 60 Minutes into the 238 Venezuelan men sent to the mega-prison in El Salvador found that only 12% had committed violent crimes. 75% of the men sent to El Salvador had no criminal record. 22% had committed non-violent crimes like; theft, shoplifting, or trespassing.

Attorney General Pam Bondi was asked about 75% of the men sent to El Salvador without a criminal record by a reporter. She responded by saying that they were “illegal aliens in this country illegally.” She also said that if an undocumented immigrant murders someone in the U.S, they will be charged here, imprisoned here, and she would seek the death penalty so the victim’s family can see justice being served.

In the same response to the reporter’s question about 60 Minutes’ discovery while investigating the men sent to El Salvador, she contradicted the statement she had just made about the consequences of murdering an American citizen when she said, ‘If they committed a violent crime, we don’t even have to charge them, we can just get them out of our country.’ (paraphrasing)

Karoline Leavitt, Press Secretary for the Trump Administration said the men sent to El Salvador were heinous murderers and terrorists, also contradicting Pam Bondi’s statement that committing murder would result in the death penalty in the United States.

75% of the men sent to El Salvador have no criminal record

From reporting on CBSNews.com: “The government has released very little information about the men [sent to El Salvador]. But through internal government documents, we have obtained a list of their identities and found that an overwhelming majority have no apparent criminal convictions or even criminal charges.

They are now prisoners.

Among them: a makeup artist, a soccer player and a food delivery driver, being held in a place so harsh that El Salvador’s justice minister once said the only way out is in a coffin.”
